The main laws that govern what power engineers

Power engineers are governed by multiple codes and regulations which outline what power engineers can and cannot do as part of their duties.

The government codes and regulations also clearly define the certification level of power engineers.

Government Legislation

Power engineers fall under the jurisdiction of the Safety Standards Act. The Act defines regulated professions and regulated products (such as boilers and pressure piping). It also outlines the guidelines for incident reports and compliance orders.

Under the umbrella of the Safety Standards Act is the Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation (called the "Regulations" for short). The Regulations clearly define the role of power engineers, the certificaiton of power eningeers and the criteria for plant classifications.

It must be noted that the above listed laws apply to power engineers working in British Columbia. Each province has their own set of rules and regulations but are quick similar in scope and content (except for Quebec and Ontario).
